Koutalis beach, located 25 kilometres east of Chania city, is a picturesque spot close to Cape Drepano and 1 kilometre north of Kokkino Chorio. It is well-known amongst scuba divers, who often begin their exploration of sea caves at this remote beach. Koutalis is composed of large round pebbles and stones, making it an excellent spot for fishing and relaxation. To get there, you should take the road north from Kokkino Chorio to Drapanokefala hill, take the road to Faros (Lighthouse), and then follow the sign to Koutalas for 700 metres. There is a passable dirt track that leads to the beach, where you might find yourself completely alone. There is also a large cave nearby.
Another secret beach, called Vraskos, lies between Koutalis and Almirida. Unfortunately, there is no road leading to Vraskos, but its rocky sea bottom is partially covered with sand. It is an excellent spot for exploring the underwater caves and discovering the area’s historical sites, such as the Second World War cavernous shelters and traditional houses. Additionally, it was the location of a scene from the movie “Zorba the Greek”.
