Kolimbari is an idyllic seaside destination located 24km west of Chania, at the westernmost point of the long bay of Chania. It boasts a population of over 5000 and is home to a stunning long beach that stretches east to Tavronitis. The beach is sandy and has small pebbles in parts, with the sea typically being wavy like most northern Crete beaches. Here, visitors can find many options for accommodation, food, and entertainment. Nearby, there are also small coves near the monastery of Gonia, where travelers can get some peace and quiet. Boats run from the port of Kolimbari to Cape of Rodopos, with its striking cliffs and tiny secluded beaches, the most famous being Menies. Not to be missed is the historic Monastery of Gonia, located 1km northwest of the town. It honors the Virgin Mary Odigitria (i.e. Guide) and houses an impressive collection of Byzantine icons. Close by, is the Orthodox Academy of Crete, which hosts several national and international conferences on theological and general topics.
