Menies (also known as Diktynna), located 45km northwest of Chania and on the northeast shores of the Peninsula Rodopos, is a secluded beach with pebbles and deep crystal blue waters. It is sheltered from the usual winds in the area, making it perfect for those looking for a peaceful getaway away from urban centers. To reach the beach, visitors must take a 23km long dirt track from Rodopos village, though this route is not advisable for low cars. Alternatively, small boats run from Platanias harbor to Menies. The site is the ancient home of the temple of goddess Vritomartis (the Cretan version of Artemis), which was a popular pilgrimage spot in the Hellenistic and Roman times. There are some remains of the Roman temple, though the Hellenistic temple has not been located. One kilometer southwest of the beach is the old monastery of St. George, built in the 9th century and abandoned during pirate raids. The courtyard still holds a 16th century tower used for early detection of pirates. Additionally, between Menies and Afrata, there are several small bays accessible by foot or boat, including Xeronissia.
