Enjoying the stunning, deep blue waters of Glyka Nera beach is an experience that should not be missed. Located 43km west of Chora Sfakion and 75km south of Chania, this beach was even ranked amongst the best 20 beaches in Europe by the London Times in 2003. Glyka Nera, which translates to ‘sweet water’, got its name from the fresh water that gushes from its pebbles.
The only way to get to this breathtaking beach is usually by boat. Nevertheless, for the more daring and adventurous traveler, there is a path leading here from Chora Sfakion which takes 30 minutes from the nearest parking spot above Iligas beach. Additionally, there is another route from Loutro which takes 60 minutes, however, a bit of caution must be taken when hiking near the edge. Despite the slightly intimidating views, the path is well-maintained thanks to the local authorities as it is a part of the European E4 footpath.
A small tavern on a rock can be found at the beach, offering food, cold drinks and beds. There is no need to bring your own water, as the spring water is potable. The sea water is usually cold due to the springs, even during the summer months. Tamarisk trees can also be found here, providing much needed shade. So, if you have the chance, you should certainly not miss out on visiting Glyka Nera beach.
