Hersonissos is a highly popular tourist destination in Crete, located just 28 kilometers east of Heraklion. Tourists flock to the area due to the beautiful beaches and calmer sea, which are rare to find on the northern coast of Crete due to the frequent north winds. The calmer beaches are situated west of the port, and the more crowded ones to the east.
The first beach you come across east of the port is a long, narrow stretch of sand that is often flooded with visitors. It is well-organised and close to the amenities of the city, however it may not be suitable for those who do not like crowds. Heading east, there are several coves with soft sand mainly in front of hotels. The Beach of Silva Maris is the most organised of the area, with a lifeguard and plenty of facilities. Further east, Star beach is one of the busiest beaches of Crete, mainly visited by Brits and Dutch. Finally, near Cape Drapanos, there are the beaches of Eastern Hersonissos, which are much quieter.
