Kokkini Hani is a renowned resort town located just 15 kilometers west of Heraklion, beside Vathianos Kambos. It was named after the inn, run by a man named Kokkinis, that was situated here in the early 1900s. Travellers were known to use it as a place to rest during their journeys to Heraklion.
This area boasts a plethora of beaches, protected by small man-made piers. The sand is soft and the water is a crystal clear turquoise shade. Access to all beaches is open to everyone, despite most of them being located in front of hotels. In addition to the beaches, there are numerous shops and restaurants, as well as lifeguards, umbrellas, water sports, and other tourist essentials. Visitors should note that the nightlife here is not as intense as in Malia and Hersonissos.
Those interested in history and archaeology should take the opportunity to visit the nearby Niros Villa; a Late Minoan era mansion that was once used as the residence of a senior Minoan priest. The site, open to the public, features several large bronze axes, offering tables, jars, and other artifacts. It is an excellent chance to experience a glimpse of Minoan life, 4000 years ago.
