Nestled in the heart of east Crete, Stalis is a popular seaside resort, located between the bustling town of Malia and the quaint village of Hersonissos. Originally set up by the residents of Mochos, Stalis has become a much-loved destination for tourists, especially families. The resort offers a wealth of amenities, including hotels, restaurants, bars, and taverns, as well as ATMs and a pharmacy.
The focal point of Stalis is a 5km long coastal road packed with shops. Stretching alongside is a long, sandy beach with shallow waters that run up to the neighbouring town of Malia. Here, visitors can enjoy a plethora of beach activities, from volleyball and water sports, to beach umbrellas and lifeguard stations. Also of note is the Byzantine Church of Agios Ioannis, which dates back to 1600.
For any active travellers, there is the Bulgarian trail which runs from Stalis to Mochos. This path was built by Bulgarian captives during the Second World War, and takes around 5km to reach the small village. Along the way, you’ll pass a pedestrian bridge that crosses the highway and the modern monastery of Panagia Theogenitor.
The name Stalis – derived from the Greek verb stalizo, meaning ‘to stop for resting’ – is fitting for this tranquil resort, which is a great place to pause, relax and take in the beauty of Crete.
