For those wishing to visit the picturesque beach of Agiofarago, located around 80km south of Heraklion, there are two options: traversing the nearby gorge by hiking, or taking a boat from nearby ports such as Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pirgos or Kali Limenes. The first option is highly recommended as the 25-50 minute walk is stunning and includes vast caves where some hermits from the nearby Odigitria Monastery reside, as well as a chapel of St. Anthony with a well of brackish water. The beach at the exit of the gorge is beautiful, with fine pebbles and clear blue waters. There is a rocky arch to the west of the beach that is perfect for swimming beneath.
Those willing to take the journey from Heraklion should drive to Sivas village and then to Odigitria Monastery, followed by a dirt track heading to the church of Saint Anthony. After 4km, the right-hand road should be taken, which is marked with a sign to Agiofarago. There is a small plateau used for parking at the end of the road, so visitors should be aware to not park their car under the shade of a tree, as the goats may climb onto the roof for the leaves. After a half-hour walk, the beach will be reached, and it is well worth the journey. On the way, the small church of Saint Anthony and the cave of Goumenospilios can be found. Those coming by boat can visit the nearby rocky islet of Papadoplaka, which contains small ponds of sea salt, often harvested by the locals.
