Located in the Asterousia Mountains, Gournia is an inaccessible area accessible only by those with good physical fitness. The white soft limestone, reminiscent of a lunar landscape, creates five successive fjords with several small natural ponds. During some years, a tiny beach may form in the largest and most impressive fjord, due to winter rains carrying portable materials from the east. To reach this location, one must walk 2.5 hours from Matala or 1.5 hours from Vathi, where a dirt road from the Monastery of Panagia Odigitria leads.
