Located 24km north of Agios Nikolaos and 9km north of Plaka, Chomatistra is a small bay, known for its isolation and wild scenery. The area is characterized by bare mountains, steep cliffs and strong winds. The bay is ideal for fishing, thanks to its calm waters and pebble and rock-filled beach. To reach the bay, you must take a road from Plaka that passes through the village Vrouchas and its old windmills and stone houses. You will also find an old German observation post, a wind park and the white chapel of St. John (Agios Ioannis). The bay is a short walk away from Cape Aforesmenos, at the tip of which is an abandoned lighthouse built in 1864 by the French Lighthouse Company. According to legend, the cape was named after Caiaphas, the crucifier of Jesus, who was buried in the area after his death on a journey to Rome.
