Located just 1 kilometer south of Agios Nikolaos lake, Gargadoros is a beautiful suburb of the city. Here, locals flock to two nearby beaches for a refreshing dip in the sea and to sample some of the delicious restaurants and bars nearby. The first beach, situated next to the Gargadoros tavern, is pebbly and well-maintained – a great option for those staying in Agios Nikolaos and craving a break from the ordinary. If you walk to the small pier on the north, you’ll discover the second beach, which can only be accessed by a wooden ladder. This secret beach is sandy and the perfect spot for some peaceful relaxation.
The name Gargadoros is believed to have originated from two potential sources. The first, and by far the most common, is the Greek words “gargaro idor,” which translates to “limpid water” and refers to the water from the small river that used to flow in the area. The second, less likely, but still captivating theory is that it comes from the Greek words “gorga dora,” meaning “fast gifts” – likely a reference to the abundance of easily-catchable fish in the small harbor.
