Kolokytha is a remote island located off the coast of the Spinalonga Peninsula, roughly 12km north of Agios Nikolaos and near Elounda. To get to the stunning beach of Agios Loukas, better known as Kolokytha, travellers must take a scenic route from Elounda. This route follows the coast, passing the ancient salt pans of Elounda, and eventually reaches the Spinalonga Peninsula. The road then changes to a dirt track and after a few hundred metres, drivers should turn right to get to the church of St Luke. From here, the small island of Kolokytha is visible, home to thousands of nesting seagulls. After taking one of the downward trails, visitors will come across the beach – a serene cove with white sand and tranquil waters, surrounded by olive groves and wheat crops. Unfortunately, due to its beauty, it has become quite popular and can be quite crowded during the summer months. However, arriving early in the morning or late afternoon can offer a peaceful experience. Just to the north of Kolokytha Beach lies the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Kolokytha, which dates back to the 5th-6th century. The area is also home to a few other secluded bays, ideal for those looking to avoid the tourist spots. Here visitors can find sand, rocks and tamarisk trees, as well as the remains of a limestone quarry.
