Just east of Richtis Beach, lies the vast and rugged mount of Liopetro. It was home to the fort Liopetro, which is now the site of the Prophet Elijah chapel. Below Liopetro lies the ancient monastery of St. John. To access it, you must take a rough road from the main road connecting Agios Nikolaos to Sitia. The cement road leads to a beach known as Agios Ioannis. Depending on the sea currents, the beach can accumulate rubbish and is largely rocky. The backdrop of the towering phyllitic rocks of Liopetro is an impressive sight.
