Located just 15km east of Rethymnon, Spilies, also known as Tou Maliou to Riaki or Kitrenosi Beach, is a hidden gem nestled between the villages of Skaleta and Geropotamos. Its seclusion makes it a perfect destination for those looking for a tranquil beach getaway. The beach, which is pebbled and lined with vertical cliffs, also boasts crystal clear waters and a number of interesting sea caves and rock formations. The east end of the beach has been damaged by a winter collapse; however, the caves here are still home to the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Visitors can explore the rugged shoreline and make their way to the breathtaking natural arch of Geropotamos. On the beach, umbrellas, beds and a small canteen are available, though waves may be present due to the common north winds. To get to the beach, take the main road to Heraklion and look for Creta Farm. Turn onto the road behind the gas station located on your left and follow the signs for Spilies.
