Located just 2km west of the city center of Rethymnon, Koumbes is the only beach in the western region of the city. It is aptly named after the Turkish word Kubbe, which translates to ‘dome’, a fitting description of its views of the imposing Fortezza fortress. Comprised of sand and fine pebbles, Koumbes beach has blossomed in recent years and is now a priority for the local municipality; major projects such as walkways and other enhancements have been undertaken.
Visitors to Koumbes will have access to an array of touristic services, such as lifeguards, umbrellas, showers and changing rooms, as well as a variety of accommodation options and eateries including restaurants, taverns, snack bars and cafes. The beach is easily reached from the city center either by bus or on foot, with the latter taking no more than 20 minutes.
