Pervolia, Misiria, and Platanias (or Platanes) are three suburbs of Rethymnon located 3-5km west of the city. These villages have been incorporated into the urban region due to the residential development. Adjacent to these suburbs lies a long sandy beach that is an extension of the Rethymnon Bay. This beachfront stretches from the harbor of Rethymno to the east, spanning 13km to Skaleta. The beach is well-maintained, offering a variety of food, drinks, and accommodation. Additionally, the Rethymno Gulf is a protected area, as it is one of the three most important places for sea turtle Caretta caretta nesting in Greece. This area has more than 400 nests every year.
