Situated 3.5km north of Kolymbari and 28km west of Chania, Afrata is a small and picturesque village, with a lovely beach located 1km east of the village. The beach is pebbly and with beautiful water colors, making it ideal for quiet holidays, primarily preferred by local residents. Umbrellas and tamarisk trees offer shade and there is a small canteen from where you can buy food and water. The road from Kolymbari is asphalt, but be careful as it is narrow. On the way to the beach you will pass the historic Monastery of Panagia Odigitria Gonia and the Orthodox Academy, where the Turkish occupation of Crete began in 1645. Also, northeast of Afrata is Ellinospilios cave, with significant archaeological findings and an entrance that is just above sea level. However, the path to the cave is quite rough and is mainly suggested for experienced walkers.
