Situated 6km west of Chania city, Kalamaki lies as the seaside part of Galatas village, a fertile plane once known for its citrus and olive groves. Today, tourism is the main growth factor of Galatas. Kalamaki beach is a stunning stretch of sand that begins 1km east at Agii Apostoli, boasting fine shoreline and shallow waters. It is well-equipped, providing umbrellas, showers, lifeguard services, food and accommodation, beach bars, and water sports. Additionally, a small cove is formed on the western edge of the beach, separated from the main beach by a narrow strip of sand. City buses run frequently from Chania city center to Kalamaki. Galatas is the birthplace of Mikis Theodorakis, a renowned Greek composer and activist who was imprisoned during the 1967 military dictatorship. During the Turkish occupation, Galatas was inhabited by Christians, and its neighbouring village, Daratsos, was occupied by Ottomans.
Just west of Kalamaki is Glaros beach, a large bay extending from Holy Apostles to the west. It is considered one of the most developed beaches in Chania, with its fine sand and shallow blue waters. Tamarisk trees provide natural shade, and its proximity to the city makes it a popular holiday destination. However, if the north winds become too strong, visitors are encouraged to visit the nearby protected coves of Holy Apostles.
