Located approximately 7 kilometers west of the city of Chania, Stalos is a popular tourist destination that boasts a stunning sandy beach, Kato Stalos, and a picturesque traditional village, Pano Stalos. The beach is well-equipped with all necessary amenities, such as parasols and beach chairs, and is awarded the Blue Flag every year. The village of Pano Stalos is nestled in the hills, surrounded by lush greenery and awe-inspiring rock formations.
Stalos provides ideal accommodations for a holiday getaway, with numerous services and amenities within easy reach. Furthermore, there is a regular bus service connecting Stalos to the city of Chania.
The origin of the name Stalos is mysterious, with two prevailing myths. The first one claims that the area is named after the Greek mythical figure Talos, the bronze giant that protected Crete by circling the island three times per day. The second theory suggests that the name is derived from the Greek word ‘stalizo’, which means to stop and rest, and is thought to be linked to the local shepherds who would stop there with their flocks.
