Peristeres is a beach located 47km southwest of the city of Rethymnon, between Fragokastelo and Rodakino village. It is well-known to the Greeks due to former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras frequenting the beach. It is divided into two separate coves and is generally quiet, since access is not as easy as nearby beaches Korakas and Polirizos. There are no facilities, only some small taverns. The beach is pebbly and has rocks in places, making it a favored spot for nudists and campers. The name Peristeres means pigeons in Greek, due to the small sea caves at the cape of Kastelos where they nest. The caves are incredibly beautiful, with arches, huge boulders, and tiny sandy beaches.
The beach has a significant history, as it was where the German general Heinrich Kreipe was moved to Egypt during the Second World War. The abduction was characterized as one of the most difficult and bolder operations that made Hitler furious. Allied submarines and destroyers also used this bay for bringing supplies for the fight against the Germans.
To access Peristeres, visitors can take the paved road from Polirizos to the west and turn left on the first dirt road they find on their left hand. Alternatively, they can drive the 4km dirt road that connects Lakki (near Skaloti village) with Polirizos.
