Koutsouras is a charming seaside village situated 55km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 20km east of Ierapetra, nestled in a lush valley of olive groves and pine trees against the backdrop of Mount Thripti. The village itself is well-equipped with a police station, pharmacy, clinic, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and more, all while maintaining its tranquil atmosphere. On the western side of the village lies the main beach, which is well-organised and adjacent to the old settlement. Here, visitors can find plenty of shade from the tamarisk trees, or take a stroll along the coarse black sand. For those looking for a more secluded beach, head just 1.5km west to the small harbour, or 1km east to the sandy Koutsourelis beach, perfect for families. A visit to Koutsouras would not be complete without exploring the surrounding area. Take a hike through the southern slopes of Thripti, now recovering from a 1993 fire, or visit the park of Apiganias for a taste of the pines. Further afield, the gorge of Red Butterflies runs through a canyon of pine trees and springs, starting in the village of Orino.
