Situated 96km east of Agios Nikolaos and 26km east of Sitia, the area of Itanos is home to the archaeological site of the same name, as well as the three consecutive bays of Erimoupolis. A unique experience here is to snorkel above the ruins as part of the ancient city has been identified under the water. To access the beaches, visitors must drive to the archaeological site and park there. Short trails will then lead them to the local beaches, the first of which can be found south of a small fort situated at the tip of a peninsula. It is not organized and is known for its white sand and calm waters. The second beach is located in front of the parking lot and is sandy with rocks in certain areas. Finally, the longest beach lies hidden behind a hill north of the parking lot and has beautiful turquoise waters and fine sand. It is not organized, but has become increasingly popular in recent times.
