The region between Platani and Sitia airport is an area of vast empty lands with sparse vegetation and wild jagged rocks, where there are no roads. This region is referred to as Melissokipi (aka Bee Gardens) and is crossed by numerous deep streams that end in the sea and are even more prominent during the winter. One of the streams is called Vathys Potamos (Deep River) and at its mouth, a small sandy beach is formed. Unfortunately, this beach is often battered by strong winds and waves that bring in garbage. The area is also called Spilia (Cave), as nearby the beach lies one of the largest caves in Crete, which can comfortably fit a large vessel.
