Located 33km south of Rethymnon, near Plakias, is the Pirates’ Fjord. This tiny cove is situated south of Mouri or Karavos Cape and is enclosed by sheer vertical cliffs. The beach is narrow, no more than 2m wide, and composed of sand at the start which then turns into a rocky harbor. It is believed that the area got its name from the pirates who sought refuge here during the Byzantine era.
Today, the fjord is home to a modern hotel. It provides beds and umbrellas on the smooth rocks around its perimeter. Visitors can also take part in scuba diving lessons at the club located in the hotel grounds and make use of the water pedallons available. Access to the beach is possible either by crossing the hotel (via Damnoni) or by boat from Plakias.
