Nestled between Rethymno prefecture and Chania, east of Georgioupolis’ beaches, lies the beaches of Kavros and Kournas. Though much of the beach has been developed, a small portion has been left untouched. Here, an expansive and incredibly important dune ecosystem can be found, home to its own unique flora. The dunes of Kavros are particularly fragile, but are invaluable in protecting the nearby lands from erosion. In winter, these dunes can become dotted with small ponds, making the landscape look quite different from the summer months.
