Located just past Peristeras, the Katharades area is home to a series of smaller beaches in the shadow of the famous Koutsounari shore. Characterized by strong winds, Katharades is a top destination for those looking for a great windy experience in Crete. The bays here are relatively unknown and not often frequented by visitors, making it a tranquil and peaceful spot. Also known as Paplinou, the area is home to the old Panagia Paplinou monastery, located nearby.
The picturesque landscape is composed of numerous rock shelters and other unique rock formations, formed by time and erosion in the conglomerate soil. In recent years, the region has seen a mild development, spurred on by the construction of several large hotels along the main road. Here, visitors can find a number of restaurants, mini markets, and lodgings.
The beach is comprised of gray sand and stones, with some areas of sand. Tamarisk trees provide some shade, and umbrellas are also available. The beach is well-organized by the hotels, offering beach volley courts, sunbeds, showers, and water sports facilities.
Katharades is perfect for relaxation. The seas are usually calm, and the water is cold and deep. It’s very easy to access from Ierapetra, as the main road connecting the town to Sitia and Makrigialos runs close by. You can even get here by bus, which runs between these areas.
