Located just 500m from the city centre of Rethymno, this golden-sand beach is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. It is part of the 13km long beachfront of Rethymno Bay, stretching east all the way to Skaleta. Despite its popularity, the beach never seems too crowded. Along the beachfront, Eleftheriou Venizelou Str. runs, making it ideal for evening strolls. At the beach, visitors can expect to find umbrellas, lifeguard, beach bars, showers, changing rooms and water sports. Furthermore, the loggerhead sea turtle (Carretta carretta) lays its eggs on the beach; visitors may find some areas that have been marked with ropes, which are protecting the eggs that have been found. The Rethymno Gulf is one of the most important nesting sites for the loggerhead sea turtle in Greece, with more than 400 nests a year.
