As a part of the Gortyna municipality, Gergeri is home to several smaller villages, including Apomarma, Kardamiana, Mastrachiana, Raptis, Tzaniana, and Psalida (although this village is now abandoned) The community has a population of 1440 people, with 1241 residing in Gergeri The main occupations of the locals are livestock and agriculture, and the women of Gergeri have formed a cooperative to produce and standardize various local products

The village’s name is believed to be of pre-Hellenic origin, adding to its rich history and cultural heritage Gergeri is home to several beautiful churches, including the patron saint Agios Georgios, celebrated on November 3rd Other notable churches include Agios Stilianos, Ipapanti, Metamorfosi of Sotiras, and Profitis Ilias, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the Mesara region The nearby country church of Panagia Kera, also known as Chanoutia, is adorned with 15th-century frescoes and holds a somber significance, as it is the site where 25 villagers were executed by the Germans during the war
Gergeri is also known for its lively festivities and cultural events, which aim to preserve the traditions and customs of the village The feast of Agios Georgios Methistis on November 3rd is a particularly special event, where villagers open their barrels of new wine for the first time and celebrate their patron saint Another significant feast is held on September 23rd in honor of Agios Ioannis of Rouvas, the patron saint of shepherds This feast attracts shepherds from all over Psiloritis, who gather under the oaks and participate in traditional festivities, including the famous bear dance
One of the most important events in Gergeri is the annual “Apokrigiomata” festival, held on the Monday after Carnival in the nearby village of Rouvas This festival showcases the customs and traditions of the region, including the funeral, plough-seed-time, wedding, “drawings,” and the bear dance Groups from all over Greece and abroad also participate, making it a cultural exchange and celebration of diversity
