Malia has a stunning beach situated in front of the town, which can get quite crowded. For those who prefer a quieter experience, Potamos beach is located east of the port and is much less crowded, yet still well organised. This beach is situated near the archaeological site of Malia and is bordered by several hotels with small coves. The area is of great environmental importance, with reeds and a diverse range of birds inhabiting the wetland. The river that flows into Potamos beach is fed by the water from Selena Mount and the many springs of fresh water in the sea make it possible to drink the sea water. Visitors to Potamos will also be able to catch sight of the sand lilies in autumn and goats descending from the mountain slopes to take a dip in the sea.
